Audi

Audi is a German car manufacturer and part of the Volkswagen Group. In early 2022, the company announced that it would enter Formula 1 four years later. This marks Audi's debut in the pinnacle of motorsport. The decision-makers began actively searching for a team to partner with, and eventually, Sauber was chosen.

Audi takes over Sauber

The entry did not come as a surprise, as rumors had been circulating for months. Due to the new Formula 1 regulations, the timing was ideal for Audi to join, as the days of unlimited budgets are over. Starting in 2026, a budget cap will apply, meaning each team has a maximum amount they can spend on engine development per year.
Following the announcement, Audi held talks with various interested teams. McLaren, among others, showed immediate interest in a deal but made it clear that selling the team was not an option. Audi also saw potential partners in other teams. Company executives took the time to carefully assess their options through discussions with several constructors. Ultimately, Audi partnered with Sauber, which has since been fully acquired by the German brand. From 2026 onwards, Audi will appear on the F1 grid as a full works team.
