Hermann Tilke

Hermann Tilke is a German engineer, former racing driver, and the most prominent designer of modern Formula 1 circuits. Born on December 31, 1954, in Olpe, Germany, Tilke founded Tilke GmbH & Co. KG, which has been involved in nearly every new F1 track project since the 1990s.

The career of Hermann Tilke

Tilke began as a touring car driver before focusing on engineering. In 1984, he founded his own engineering firm, specializing in racetrack and test facility design. His first major F1 project was the redesign of the Red Bull Ring in the 1990s.

He went on to design circuits including Sepang (Malaysia), Sakhir (Bahrain), Shanghai (China), Yas Marina (Abu Dhabi), Istanbul Park (Turkey), and the Jeddah street circuit (Saudi Arabia). He also co-designed the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, USA.
