Carlos Sainz Sr, the father of current Williams driver Carlos Sainz, is one of the potential candidates for the FIA presidency. Fernando Alonso shared his thoughts on what it would mean for the drivers if the Spaniard would be elected.
The FIA elections will take place in December, with the Spaniard having to run against the federation's current President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
"Yeah, I read the news and I actually spoke with Carlos I think on Sunday for different topics and yes, we spoke about this thing. Obviously he has a lot of experience in motorsport. He knows a lot of people in motorsport as well and what maybe the sport needs in this side of the barrier, let's say," Alonso responded to GPblog's question about Sainz Sr being a potential candidate for the role.
"So, it could be a fresh approach, but at the same time, this is a FIA theme, this is a... The whole sport needs to agree on something and, we'll see what happens. But obviously he will be always a great candidate because he knows what the sport needs from this side, that is what we like, the drivers," Aston Martin's two-time world champion concluded.

Verstappen did not comment on this question

On Thursday, during the media day in Imola, defending world champion Max Verstappen was also asked about the same matter.
Talking to GPblog among others, a question the Dutchman had to answer was whether he believes Sainz Sr would be a better President than Ben Sulayem. "Yeah, you can fill that in yourself. It's stupid for me to comment on that here," he answered.
