After a frustrating end to a promising Monaco Grand Prix weekend, Fernando Alonso has admitted that he’s willing to accept DNFs like this in 2025 — if it means better luck comes his way in 2026.
The Spanish driver qualified an impressive P7 in his Aston Martin last weekend, later promoted to P6 following Hamilton’s penalty. However, an Energy Recovery System (ERS) failure forced him to retire on lap 36 at Rascasse, ending his hopes of scoring his first points of the season.
The race also marked the first race weekend appearance of Adrian Newey with Aston Martin. The renowned aerodynamicist and car designer has joined the team as they look to build a more competitive car for next season.

Full focus on 2026 for Alonso

Alonso told the media, including GPblog, that he’s willing to accept setbacks this season if it leads to greater success in 2026, "Well to be honest I will be happy if everything goes like this the whole season and I win in Australia next year."
"For me it doesn't change to finish P8 in Barcelona or Canada to score 8 points this year or 22. It doesn't change much."
The Spaniard, winless since 2013, says he's content with minimal points and even more DNFs this season if it means positioning himself and the team for a breakthrough when the 2026 regulation changes come into play.
"While next year with the change of regulation we really hope to be a contender for the championship."
"So I'm happy to accumulate all the DNFs this year."

Alonso: "I'm performing at a very high level"

The 43 year old continued to be motivated despite the poor start to the season as he told the media that he continues to bring at his peak performance to the track every race week, "I'm performing at a very high level, you know."
Despite this, Alonso also discussed that he would also be happy to achieve a good result one weekend, "obviously you never have self-doubt when you're a Formula 1 driver but it's true that from time to time to have a nice result is always welcome."
"It puts you a smile and you go tomorrow to the gym and you are a little bit more motivated and you have some good news. In my case, there are no good news, so I need to keep going tomorrow morning to the gym and I need to keep performing well and that's what I take."
