Kimi Antonelli scored two back-to-back podiums at the Brazilian and Las Vegas Grands Prix, and was in contention to score yet another at the Qatar GP as well. However, a costly mistake on the penultimate lap of the race, left the rookie in fifth position.
I went in a bit quicker than the lap before. Obviously with dirty air, the car is more unpredictable because you have less downforce and the tyres overheat more. I went in a bit quicker and just lost the rear all of a sudden, I didn't expect it.- Kimi Antonelli
Antonelli was in contention for another podium finish at the Qatar GP, after McLaren made a strategic blunder, which left them playing catch-up throughout the race. Oscar Piastri was able to get past both Antonelli and Carlos Sainz, before setting after Max Verstappen, who led the race.
However, with Lando Norris cruising up to the back of Antonelli's Mercedes W14, it became more difficult for the Brit to make his way past the 19-year old rookie. Sainz was just a few seconds ahead of Antonelli, but suddenly began to slow down after an issue with his Williams FW47.
Antonelli was subsequently gaining on the Spaniard with just a few laps remaining. However, on the penultimate lap of the race, Antonelli lost control of his Mercedes at Turn 9, falling off the track, as Norris went through to claim fourth position.

Speaking about losing out on a third consecutive podium, Antonelli stated: "Obviously with dirty air, the car is more unpredictable because you have less downforce and the tyres overheat more. I went in a bit quicker and just lost the rear all of a sudden, I didn't expect it."
Antonelli continued: "Obviously, at such a high speed, I went off track and then the next corner, with picking up all the dirt, I had a massive moment again and went off track again. It was really annoying."
This incident also led to harsh online hate, as it impacted the championship battle between Norris and Verstappen greatly. Helmut Marko also criticised Antonelli, before eventually apologising.
Red Bull put out a statement on Monday morning, saying: "Replay footage shows Antonelli momentarily losing control of his car, thus allowing Norris to pass him. We sincerely regret that this has led to Kimi receiving online abuse."
