In a certain sense, Laurent Mekies is not to be envied. In the middle of a season, when the performances are not as desired, he has been appointed team boss to get Red Bull Racing back on track towards victories. A substantial challenge, one that many would have preferred to have taken on at the start of a new season.
At the start of a new season, it is in principle easier to make adjustments or go in a different direction, than to turn the oil tanker during the year - with races following each other at a rapid pace.
Jonathan Wheatley knows all about that. After a long period in various functions at Red Bull Racing, he started his job at ambitious Sauber - from next season Audi's factory team - at the beginning of this season, after a preparation and two Grands Prix have already been completed.
About what awaits Mekies, the Brit says to, among others, GPblog: "I think it’s a challenge, but everything about being a team principal of a Formula 1 team is a challenge. You can’t always choose when you start the position, and you have to make the most of it."
For him, the first few months at Audi were 'a very intense period'. Yet Wheatley also states: "I have to say I’ve loved every second: the new challenges, the energy, the atmosphere in the team. And of course, that’s just getting stronger, and the energy is just getting more intense as a result of our performances recently."
With this, Wheatley is undoubtedly referring to the British Grand Prix, in which Nico Hulkenberg won a surprise third place on behalf of Sauber.
