Former F1 driver Martin Brundle believes that Lando Norris has been "not quite as decisive" compared to his teammate, Oscar Piastri, to start the 2025 Formula 1 season. After challenging Max Verstappen for the 2024 world title last campaign, Norris was seen as the title favourite going into the new season, which started off very impressively with a fine win at the Australian Grand Prix.
However, problems with his one-lap pace in qualifying has hampered his start to the season, whereas teammate Piastri has looked extremely comforatable behind the wheel of the papaya-colored car, winning four in five races after the weekend in Melbourne, meaning
he leads the world championship on 131 points, with Norris 16 points behind on 115.
Piastri took another impressive victory, this time at the Miami Grand Prix, to extend his championship lead over Norris
Brundle sees both drivers "stepping up their game" as 2025 continues
What has been most impressive about Piastri's start to the 2025 season, just his third year in the pinnacle of motorsport, is his racecraft ability, which Norris has not been able to replicate.
Speaking on Sky Sports' 'The F1 Show' podcast, Brundle was asked if he would give any advice to the Brit about trying to catch his Australian teammate in terms of racecraft.
"I think it's too early to critique anybody, really," the now TV pundit started by saying.
"But what I do know from history is that when drivers are up for a world championship, they step their game up, they find an overdrive gear. We have seen it over the years and decades where they just take off and improve every aspect of what they are doing.
"In Sunday's race, Max went into the first corner, locked the front axle, and started to run wide. Lando had tucked underneath him, and the track is clear ahead of him, so he hits the throttle. If he had gone steaming around the outside of turn 2, it would have looked genius for Lando, but Max had a slide.
"Max's problems in turns 1 and 2 cost Lando the Grand Prix, as far as I'm concerned. But you can't say Lando should have done anything else other than hit the throttle, as it looked like an overtaking opportunity," the 65-year-old explained as he unpacked the first lap of the Miami Grand Prix.
Action on the track has already shown how smart Piastri is when it comes to overtaking and setting moves up, and that is something that Norris should be looking to improve on, Brudnle believes.
"I think they will both address any issues they have where they need to improve, and they will both raise their game. But there is something in the way. Lando is not quite as decisive with how he places the car when he overtakes. I think that is exactly where they are, but I don't think it will stay like that for the rest of the season," the Brit concluded.
