During the Hungarian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen endured a tough race weekend, finishing in ninth place. After the race, he was summoned to the stewards due to a close call with Lewis Hamilton. Dutch F1 analyst and racing driver Rudy van Buren jokingly commented on the episode.
Max Verstappen had been stuck behind the Ferrari driver for several laps, and during an overtaking attempt, Hamilton ran off the track at Turn 4.
When Viaplay presenter Rob Kamphues asked in Vroooom for Van Buren's opinion on this moment, the Dutch driver couldn't hold back his laughter: “We (Verstappen, ed.) show our nose. Then we shout: 'Boo!' That's how the door opens and then you're past, without contact,” analysed the 33-year-old.
“He (Hamilton, ed.) just drove off himself,” Van Buren continued. Eventually, Hamilton only finished twelfth in Budapest, a circuit where he usually excels. The Brit has won the race eight times in his career, making him the record holder.
After the race, the Brit did not appear before the stewards during the investigation into the incident with Verstappen. The seven-time world champion believed that going off track was necessary to avoid a collision. In the end, no penalty was issued.
Analyst Allard Kalff also shared his opinion on Verstappen's action at Hamilton: “If both keep driving, you have an accident. Max was indeed right on the kerbstones on the inside and didn't need much space. So Lewis didn't have to give him much either.”
Kalff concluded: “Max had enough. Before that, he was almost driven off and Lewis really held him back. And he was so slow that Max thought: 'You sort it out yourself.'”
