It's the summer break in Formula 1, allowing Max Verstappen to go on vacation. However, there was a Dutch driver from Red Bull Racing who took action on Wednesday and even managed to win a race in a chaotic way.
Jarno Opmeer participated on behalf of Red Bull Racing in the virtual PSGL race at the Silverstone circuit. Up until the very last round, he was still in third place, behind teammate Frederik Rasmussen and race leader, Otis Lawrence. However, the Dutchman had a clever trick up his sleeve.
Instead of choosing to cross the finish line following the track on the racing line like his competitors, the virtual driver of Red Bull Racing decided to finish through the pit lane. This deicision paid off as he crossed the finish line in the first place. The difference at the finish line was only 0.008 seconds, but it was enough for Opmeer to win the race.
Immediately, second-place Lawrence questioned whether a move like this was allowed. Opmeer himself questioned his decision to go through the pit lane. The Dutchman did not receive a penalty in the game for his action.
The race organization posted on social media about a 'controversial end' to the race. The message also read: "As per the regulations: "The stewards may penalise drivers for incidents not reported to the stewards or not covered by this ruleset nor by the racing code."
So, it is still unclear whether Opmeer's victory will indeed stand. If it does, the Dutchman will take over the championship lead from Lawrence.
