Giedo van der Garde has pointed out a key area where Max Verstappen holds a clear edge over Lando Norris. Speaking on Vrooooom on Viaplay, the former F1 driver explained that Norris seems to struggle under direct pressure from Verstappen — something his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri handles better in the eyes of Van der Garde.

Verstappen still has Norris in his 'pocket' despite Monaco Grand Prix victory

Giedo van der Garde noted Max Verstappen's aggressive start against Oscar Piastri during the Monaco Grand Prix but pointed out that the Red Bull driver couldn’t find a way past the McLaren around the tight streets of Monte Carlo. Van der Garde observed a key difference between how the two McLaren drivers are handling battles with the Dutchman.
‘’When he was fighting Norris, Max would have definitely put him aside. He would have overtaken him too. Max has Norris in his pocket when it comes to battles on the track. And Piastri is somewhat a Max 2.0. He's good in fights, strong in overtaking, they have much more respect for each other.’’

Despite an aggressive attempt at the first corner, Max Verstappen couldn’t progress beyond fourth place in the Monaco Grand Prix. The Dutchman led for a significant portion of the race, but a mandatory second pit stop — which he delayed until the penultimate lap — ultimately cost him a chance at the podium. Former F1 world champion Damon Hill has since questioned Red Bull's strategy.
Lando Norris ultimately claimed victory, securing his second win of the season for McLaren. The British driver’s triumph tightened the title race, closing the gap to teammate and championship leader Oscar Piastri to just three points. Max Verstappen now sits third in the standings, 25 points adrift.
