The 2025 Spanish Grand Prix weekend is officially underway, with Free Practice 1 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya offering the first glimpse into the pecking order following a wave of upgrades across the grid. Under sunny skies and warm track temperatures, it was Norris who went quickest. With
front wing flexion under the spotlight and the FIA’s revised TD018 directive now in full effect, teams arrived in Spain keen to assess how their updates—especially in the aerodynamic department—would perform. Teams including RB and Williams used aero rakes this session to test the performance of their changes.
The Mclaren of Norris continued to impress during this session, as he topped the time sheets as the drivers put on a set of soft tyres. Meanwhile, teammate Oscar Piastri only managed to go fifth fastest, trailing closely behind the Ferrari's and Verstappen.
The other teams may be in trouble this weekend if Mclaren shows this same pace consistently, at a track where qualifying is key.
