Lando Norris continued his brilliant form with the resumption of Formula 1 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The McLaren driver led much of the action-filled outing on the Baku streets.
The session, which kicked off on a dusty circuit in Baku, would soon see Norris' teammate, Oscar Piastri, suffer a power unit failure. The McLaren driver was speculated to be out of the session until a red flag, caused by an issue with the kerb, handed him a lifeline.
The red flag, triggered by damage to the kerb at Turns 16 and 17, took much of the session to be properly resolved. However, with about 20 minutes left before the conclusion of FP1, race control gave the green light for running to resume.
With the restart came ‘business as usual’ for McLaren. While Max Verstappen briefly appeared in the mix to set the fastest time, the papaya-coloured team ultimately dominated again, securing a one-two at the top of the timesheets.
Scuderia Ferrari offered a glimpse of hope to the watching tifosi, with Charles Leclerc clocking the third-fastest time.
Lewis Hamilton had a moment with the wall, which largely ruined his session. George Russell, on his part, bounced back from missing out on media day on Thursday to finish in fourth place.
Here are the final standings from FP1:
