Lewis Hamilton did not have the strongest first part of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend. However, he was able to make a comeback on Sunday. After the race, he explained why he was struggling.
Despite starting from the pit lane, Hamilton quickly carved through the field. With the right strategy calls and a perfectly timed pit stop, he made his way up into the points early in the race. The Belgian GP Sunday was much better for Hamilton than Saturday. Speaking to GPBlog and others, he revealed why.
About the performances he put in earlier in the weekend, he said, “Everyone in the team works so hard, we obviously had these upgrades, everyone back in the factory works so hard, and then when you come and put a performance like I had in the past two days it's tough; that's not what the team deserves.”
“It wasn't a case of necessarily coming in and not being in the right mind through the weekend. There were a few factors that did affect, particularly on the Friday. Saturday was just me”
Hamilton continued, “I recovered today, we got some points, we outscored Mercedes in points, which is great, Charles did a great job. Clearly, the car is improving, Charles was able to hold on to another podium, so I'm still going to work hard next week to try and get my first.”
After being asked to explain some of the changes made, he said, “It’s not easy to switch engineers in the middle of a season.”
“But it's someone that I've known for years. (His new engineer, ed.) was actually on my previous team (Mercedes, ed.) with me, but not in that position. So we're getting used to each other and having to learn like super super quick.”
Hamilton concluded, “The changes that we had really caught both of us out, but we did a great job overnight, and we'll just get stronger and stronger together.”
