Max Verstappen has gone through his first qualification as
a father of
a child. The Dutchman from Red Bull Racing, not long ago, was present at the
birth of Kelly Piquet, but on Friday, he was already racing the sprint
qualification in Miami. Christian Horner commented on the
performances of Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda after the sprint qualification. “Well, first of all, a very good job by Kimi Antonelli, so well done on his first sprint pole. We took a slightly different strategy in Q3 there, we did fast, slow, slow, fast. I think Max got everything out of it," said Horner to Viaplay.
Verstappen got everything out of RB21 and it was still not enough to fight for pole
Despite getting everything out of his RB21, Horner notes it was still not enough.
"We're quite good in the first sector. Okay, in sector two, sector three, we dropped quite a bit of time. We're just a little bit slow on the straight today. And that's the difference," added Horner who agrees with
Helmut Marko's assessment of Red Bull's weakness in Miami. Despite the P4 result Horner still believes in a good result for Red Bull tomorrow morning."But second row, we can still have a good race from there.”
Horner comments on Tsunoda's difficult qualification
For Yuki Tsunoda, however, it was yet another session where something didn't click for the Japanese driver, with bad consequences for him, seeing as he was eliminated early on in the first part of qualifying.
“Yuki had a lot of traffic in his first round, in the first
sector, and then a blockage at the hairpin. So, he could forget about that first
round, which puts a lot of pressure on that last attempt. And unfortunately, because of where we were
deployed in the pit lane, he was held up a bit when exiting," explains Horner.
"Therefore, he unfortunately
did not make the starting line on time. Very frustrating for Yuki, but hopefully, he can make up for it in the race,” said Horner.
He had a bunch of traffic on his first lap in the first sector and then a lockup at the hairpin so that first lap was a write-off. That puts you under a lot of pressure for that last run and unfortunately, he got held up a little bit at the end of the pit lane getting out onto the track and then, unfortunately [he] didn't manage to make that start line in time. Frustrating for Yuki but hopefully he can make some progress in the race.
