Charles Leclerc takes his first pole position of the season in unexpected fashion in Hungary, on a track he admitted on Thursday to be one of his weakest. His reaction after securing pole was priceless!

He had been having a solid weekend so far, but even Charles Leclerc probably didn’t expect to take pole position at the Hungaroring—especially after admitting on Thursday that the Hungarian circuit has never been among his strongest in terms of career performances.

Instead, to his own great surprise, the Monegasque managed to snatch pole position right at the end, edging out both McLarens—beating Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris by just 0.026 and 0.041 seconds respectively, while George Russell was only 0.053 off the pace.

Leclerc in disbelief after taking pole position

Once his race engineer Bryan Bozzi informed him that he had secured pole position, Leclerc struggled to believe it — and his reaction was truly one of a kind.

“Whaaat? Mamma mia! My God,” he exclaimed after crossing the line for the final Q3 attempt, before parking his SF-25 beneath the podium to soak in the well-deserved applause from his team, the crowd, and even his rivals.

''When I finished the lap, I really thought that this was probably good enough for P3, just, but definitely not P1, so, it was a good surprise,'' he later admitted.

Leclerc will therefore start from pole for the first time this season, hoping to convert it into his first win of the year.

The Monegasque driver has claimed five podiums so far — the same number as Max Verstappen — with the weather still holding the potential to shake things up tomorrow.
