Liam Lawson can look back on a positive Friday at the Monaco Grand Prix. The Racing Bulls driver surprised in the second free practice session with a fifth-place finish, behind both Ferraris and McLarens. Nevertheless, the New Zealander remains grounded and isn't counting his chickens before they hatch. It's only Friday and Lawson knows that too
Lawson also knows that Fridays don't determine everything, but the relief and joy were unmistakable on the New Zealander's face. He reflected on the first day in the Principality with F1TV.
‘’I'm fully aware it's only practice, but it's that [those are] reasons to be cheerful today. I mean, it's a positive day, for sure. It's one of those tracks like compared to most tracks where you're just building up the whole weekend. So, we made a good step this morning, but naturally tomorrow everyone's gonna keep building again and, we have to keep chasing that.’’
Monaco is better in an F1 car
For Lawson, it's not his first time racing in Monaco, having previously raced here in Formula 2, but he enjoys it more now.
‘’It's better in an F1 car, honestly, I've done it obviously in F2 before, and although it's much faster in F1, it's just much more compliant. It's obviously a nicer car and, it's really, really fun. So, It's very special to be able to do this here, but obviously, as you say, tomorrow is the, the important day. So, we'll focus on making another step for [F]P3 and trying to put ourselves in a good place for quali.’’This article was made in collaboration with Hidde Korte.
