Last week, Christian Horner was fired from the Red Bull Racing team. The team is having a difficult year and is currently fourth in the constructors' championship. Max Verstappen is in third place among the drivers and seems to have to forego the title, but Helmut Marko, in his weekly column at speedweek, has a very different view on this.
At Silverstone, Verstappen disappointed because a dry weather setup was chosen. The Dutchman started from pole, but ultimately finished fifth. McLaren gained ground in both championships, so the title is moving further out of sight. However, Helmut Marko hasn't given up the fight and sees plenty of opportunities.
''We still have twelve Grand Prix and four sprint races to go, good for 300 World Championship points from the GPs and 32 from the sprint races. With the deficit we have and further improvements planned for Belgium, which should bring us closer to McLaren, we certainly do not consider the fight for the world championship as decided yet.''
Horner was fired, but Red Bull quickly found a new team principal. Laurent Mekies was transferred from Racing Bulls to Red Bull Racing. Marko is excited about Mekies. Mekies was replaced by Alan Permane. Permane was already working at Racing Bulls and will continue to be involved with the team. For this reason, Mekies was chosen for Red Bull.
''For the same reasons, Laurent was also the perfect match for the new position: as an internal solution and as someone with extensive experience. Thanks to his various activities, including his later work at the FIA and Ferrari, Laurent has everything it takes to lead a top team competently.''
