Mekies explains Verstappen's 'triple advantage' for Red Bull in 2026
Laurent Mekies says having Max Verstappen is a "triple advantage" in Red Bull's development throughout the 2026 season.

The Austrian team missed out on silverware in 2025 for the first time since the 2020 season, and a return to the top of either standings will be on the mind of many.
However, Mekies has set realistic expectations for the 2026 season, acknowledging the challenge of developing their own engine, which could affect their performance early on.
It's a point that has been reaffirmed by the Frenchman, but there are also huge amounts of ambition coming from the team principal, aided by having Verstappen at the helm.
"It would be very naive to think we'll be at the top level right away. That's crazy," Mekies explained to De Telegraaf.
"It would also be strange to think Max doesn't get that; he understands it completely. Just because we're now objectively describing the current state of affairs doesn't mean we don't have the ambition to be number one. That's the only mindset that suits Red Bull.
"So, let there be no doubt about what our ultimate goal is. Max is involved in every discussion, every analysis, and the way we take risks. He's included in everything."

With the regulation overhaul heralding a new era in Formula 1, plenty of talk has surrounded how much control drivers will have over their new machines, with Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson stating that the input drivers will have in 2026 will be far greater than ever before.
Verstappen's behind-the-scenes contributions to Red Bull have been invaluable, and with the new regulations giving drivers more control over the development of their cars, his expertise could prove crucial.
"I think we have a triple advantage with Max," continued the team boss.
"First of all, because of his level of commitment. Secondly, his feel for the car and the extra brainpower he has in the car to deal with all those issues. The influence of drivers on performance is increasing with the new regulations.
"Finally, Max can push the team in the right direction like no other, so that we can get even more out of the car and engine. In that respect, he gives us a significant boost."
