Jenson Button has backtracked on what turned out to be one of Lando Norris’s key strengths.

Over the course of his career, the McLaren driver has stood out not only for his immense talent, but also for his open and spontaneous emotional side — something he never tried to hide and, over time, learned to use as a strength rather than a weakness, as many had labelled it.

One of those critics was the 1999 world champion, who has since held his hands up and admitted his mistake when speaking to BBC Radio Somerset: “I have to say, Lando wears his heart on his sleeve, and I thought that would be his downfall.

He then added: “His talent is unquestionable. His speed is just insane. I remember the first test he did in Hungary in the McLaren. Immediately, he was super quick.”

Once the title was secured, Norris also said he was proud to have won the championship in his own way, staying true to who he is rather than “trying to be as aggressive as Max or as forceful as other champions might have been in the past.”

In the week leading up to the decisive Abu Dhabi weekend, the newly crowned world champion admitted he struggled to figure out how to handle the situation and what mindset he should adopt.

Much to his own surprise, however, Norris revealed that once he got into the car he felt remarkably calm — almost as if it were just another normal day. In the end, that approach paid off, as history now shows.
