Just two more Grands Prix before the summer break, and it is expected that Max Verstappen will make the decision: will he be driving for Mercedes in 2026 or will the four-time world champion stay loyal to Red Bull Racing?
According to Nelson Piquet junior - the brother of Kelly Piquet - Verstappen's choice primarily depends on wanting to drive a good car. "Of course [money plays a role], but the most important thing is that he wants to be in a strong car. Every team will say they have the best car next year,” the Brazilian realizes in the Pelas Pistas-podcast.
Verstappen's brother-in-law confirms that Max has two options: “The only two are Red Bull and Mercedes. With McLaren, both drivers are winning,” Piquet explains.
The former F1 driver does not know what promises Red Bull has made to Verstappen. “I don't know what exactly was said. Maybe they sent Horner away to make sure he stays. I have no idea.”
Of course, what everyone wants to know is: what will Verstappen eventually choose. His brother-in-law keeps that at least in the middle: “Maybe he has already signed, but maybe he has said 'no',” is all Piquet can or wants to say about it.
Earlier, Piquet was a bit more talkative. Then he said that Max Verstappen and Mercedes only had details to discuss for a contract for 2026.
