Christian Horner observed that McLaren had a clear pace advantage over Max Verstappen’s Red Bull during the Miami Grand Prix. After his pit stop, Verstappen ended up behind George Russell and wasn’t able to pass him, which significantly impacted his race. Speaking after the race on Sunday, the Red Bull Racing team principal explained that this was a key reason why the Dutch driver couldn't finish higher than fourth place.
"Yeah, we just weren't in the same race as the McLarens today. He fought hard to keep them behind early on and did a great job. I was amazed he managed to hold them back behind for so long. So, you know, that was... yeah, you know, we just couldn't race them today. And then George got a little lucky on the VSC. You know, sometimes here, you win and lose," Horner told Viaplay. Russell emerged from the pitlane in front of polesitter Verstappen in third place.

Horner Wished for Rain in Miami

Verstappen also stated after the race that the RB21 just wasn’t responding the way he needed it to. Helmut Marko echoed this sentiment, concluding that the car simply isn't good enough at the moment. Team principal Christian Horner admitted he had been hoping for rain in Miami, which might have given Red Bull a better chance against the stronger McLarens. "I think everybody was hanging out for the rain obviously George started on the hard so I gave him more range. And yeah, you just can't predict the BSC round here, you know, so the Haas had an issue and then you got a cheap pit stop.
"We nearly got it, it was a slow stop for Mercedes, but yeah, it's just the way it goes. McLaren was definitely in a different league today."
