For the first time in four years, George Russell has a new teammate at Mercedes. The Briton revisited the challenge rookie Kimi Antonelli has at a frontrunner team.
With Lewis Hamilton leaving and Kimi Antonelli joining Mercedes, Russell also became the senior driver within the squad.
Talking to GPblog among others, the Briton reflected on the struggles the rookie also acknowledged with saying he 'wasn't delivering'.
"As a young driver you've got to look at it sort of objectively, which is in terms of his own personal performance," he began about his teammate.
The Mercedes driver also says that in terms of lap time, Antonelli could get closer to him.
"You can argue he's probably actually performing better than he did at the start of the year when you look at the deficit in terms of lap time. It's just the differences. In Canada when we were on pole he was in fourth place over half a second behind and in Spa he was only three times behind me. But that was the difference between out in Q1 or getting through to Q3."
He concluded: "So the team have made it very clear he shouldn't worry about those results, he's still doing a very good job considering his experience and the car has brought us both backwards. So that's of course very difficult to accept when you're in that position but it's never easy when the car is not performing as you expect."
Following the Hungarian Grand Prix, the suspension change introduced for the weekend made both drivers feel more comfortable, and Russell could also finish on the podium behind the two McLaren drivers.
Talking to a small group of media, including GPblog, team representative Bradley Lord also talked about the youngsters performance. Read about his verdict here!
