Toto Wolff aims playful dig at longtime rival Christian Horner
Toto Wolff and Christian Horner have locked horns several times over the past seasons in Formula 1. With the latter no longer being in the sport, does the Austrian miss his old rival?
Currently, the CEO and team principal of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, is the longest-standing boss on the grid. That is after Horner was dismissed and replaced by Laurent Mekies at Red Bull Racing.
"Yes, in a way I do [miss Horner]," Wolff began to Channel 4. "Because him and I, we've been fighting for 12 years. He's been a d*** very often and I told him."
Horner began with Red Bull Racing when the team itself was founded. "Him not being here, it's almost like one of the old dinosaurs gone. There's not many of us team principals, so it feels a bit lonelier."
Previously, Wolff also had a similar comment, that time about the Briton's future. "I need to be careful, he could rock up in the FIA then I'm really in the s***," he joked ahead of the Belgian GP to Sky Sports.
Will Wolff remain a team principal in F1?
The Mercedes team principal was then asked whether he will remain in the competition for longer. The Austrian is in a different situation, as he owns 33% of the team itself.
"Well, if I'm not performing well, I need to find a replacement for myself, and then become chairman and criticise the team from the sun lounger," he smiled.
Wolff began is his duties back in 2013. Currently, no other team principal has been in the sport for more than three years.
The longest-serving team bosses behind the Austrian are Frederic Vasseur (Ferrari) and Andrea Stella (McLaren), who both began in their role in December 2022.
