As of the Spanish Grand Prix FIA technical directive TD018 will be enforced to clamp down on the flexibility of the front wings, Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur, and his Red Bull counterpart, Christian Horner, believe this will impact the teams' level of performance. Although, it must be mentioned, that for Vasseur, the TD is much more critical, as he conveyed to media like GPblog after the race in Miami.
Vasseur speaks of a 'reset' in F1's current hierarchy
"For sure everybody will have a new front wing in Barcelona, by definition and by regulation. I think it will be perhaps a reset of the performance of everybody."
He then clarified the Scuderia's tempered development approach for the two upcoming rounds before the directive is implemented for the last race weekend of the coming triple header. "Between now and Barcelona, we have Imola and Monaco, and we will bring some small upgrades."
Horner's cautious approach, suggests the TD could impact tyre wear
Horner, however is much more conservative than his Ferrari colleague in his assessment of the impact the TD will have on all teams in Barcelona.
"For sure it's going to have an effect. Now how much it affects your competitors' [performance] versus your own, it's difficult to predict. But for sure it's a significant change. It's not just a tweak. So it will affect all of the cars, it's just to what quantum."
When asked if it could impact tyre temperature management, an area on which the papaya team have excelled at, and which is not free of controversy as Red Bull and McLaren are currently locked in a bit of a behind-the-scenes tussle over the matter at the moment, Horner said: "It can impact a whole bunch of stuff."
