Alpine has chosen to put Franco Colapinto in the car, in Jack Doohan's stead. But, what if this move doesn't work out either? Leader of the F2 championship standings, Richard Verschoor, gives his take on the state of affairs at the French team.
7 races is all Doohan's F1 stint lasted. Oliver Oakes' relationship with the team came to an abrupt end just the day before, leaving flamboyant Flavio Briatore as the acting team principal of Alpine.
On Ziggo Sport Race Café, Verschoor is asked for his opinion on the Doohan affaire. "Did he get a fair chance? Sure, he raced a few races, but I feel from the outside that he was already written off before he began," he starts.

Doohan and Colapinto versus... Aron?

The Dutch Formula 2 driver, current leader in the F2 standings, knows both drivers, but for him the third choice will be the final one. "He (Doohan, ed.) was just signed, then Colapinto came from Williams. Paul Aron was also there, because I still see it happening that he will take a seat there. He is seriously good."
"In F2, his first season was very good. A very fast guy, but so is Colapinto. He started strong in F1 last year, but he also had crashes. I hope it works out: he gets five races, I find that very peculiar to fill it up like that. It seems like sponsors pay per race," Verschoor says.

Can Verschoor pick up the pieces from Alpine's messy situation?

Can matters play out in a way that see Verschoor making his F1 debut anytime soon. "[I'm] not [in conversation] with anyone. In such a situation you can never break through. I now need to focus on finishing my season as we are going. Win the championship and look at the opportunities that arise from there," he concludes.
For now, no discussions for Verschoor, who is performing very well this season. He has been driving in Formula 2 for some time, just like Nyck de Vries did. Nothing is written off yet, but according to the Dutchman, there are currently no options.
