There has been much debate in recent weeks, what will Max Verstappen be doing in 2026? Everyone was occupied with it and F1 analysts often posed the question. Robert Doornbos was convinced of his case, but now takes back his prediction.
On the media day of the Hungarian Grand Prix, it was announced that Verstappen would be driving for Red Bull next year. The Dutchman confirmed it himself at a media moment, putting all rumours to bed.
Robert Doornbos was firmly convinced that Verstappen was going to Mercedes, but he was wrong. On Instagram, the analyst is now eating humble pie and made a surprising revelation.
"Congratulations to Max and Red Bull! From day one, they’ve been the best combination in F1."
"There’s been a lot of commotion around my statement regarding Max potentially moving to Mercedes. Not only have I had the privilege of driving in F1 myself, but I’ve also been an F1 analyst for over 10 years, with my own sources and an opinion that, I believe, deserves respect."
"I carry out my job with great passion, as many of you can see. And let’s be honest — you can’t always roll a dice at six and this time, that’s become clear!"
Doornbos also revealed that he was present in private conversations about Verstappen and Mercedes.
"Believe me when I say that I was personally present at private conversations where the deal between Max and Mercedes was discussed in detail."
"This was not a statement I just pulled out of thin air! It’s also clear that a lot has changed internally at Red Bull in the meantime. Christian Horner out immediately, Max staying for 2026!"
"I can only look forward to what promises to be a legendary second half of the F1 season," Doornbos concluded.
After the dismissal of Horner, Verstappen has Laurent Mekies as team boss at Red Bull, with whom he is happy and satisfied. The Dutchman told GPblog and others that he enjoys working with Mekies, partly because he always asks the right questions.
