Valtteri Bottas is set to become the first driver for the new Cadillac F1 Team, GPblog can exclusively report. The Finn has reached an agreement with the new team, which will make its debut in Formula 1 in 2026.
The expectation is that the signatures will soon be put under the agreement, after which the partnership will officially be announced.
With Bottas, Cadillac gets a chunk of experience for the adventure in Formula 1. The 35-year-old Finn is a former vice-champion, currently the third driver for Mercedes. He is known for his excellent technical knowledge, making him invaluable for a team that is preparing for entry into F1 in the coming months.
Cadillac wants to use the coming period to work on the development of the first F1 car in the simulator. The team also wants to test with an old Ferrari car on the track. In both cases, Bottas will be used by Cadillac. However, it needs to be seen how this work can be combined with his job at Mercedes.
It is still unknown who will get the second seat next to Bottas at Cadillac. Sergio Perez is the main candidate, partly because of the large amount of sponsorship money the Mexican brings with him.
