Red Bull definitively and completely renounces the recruitment of Alex Dunne, GPblog has learned. The Irishman will therefore not join the Red Bull Junior Team, after it had already become clear that the youngster had missed out on a seat at Racing Bulls.
Earlier today, Helmut Marko indicated that Dunne was 'no longer an option' for Red Bull. The Austrian was seemingly referring to an F1 seat at Racing Bulls, but appeared to leave the option of the driver joining the team's junior programme.
GPblog, however, understands that there is no place for the Irishman there either, and he will not receive a contract from Red Bull.
Thus, Dunne has gambled and lost, it seems. The nineteen-year-old could not come to an agreement with McLaren about his schedule for next year, which led the British team to part ways with the talent immediately.
The Formula 2 driver had Red Bull as a backup. He was on the Austrians' radar which was first confirmed to GPblog by Helmut Marko.
A few weeks later, it turns out that Dunne will not join the team at all.
Rumors suggest that not everyone within the Red Bull organization was convinced by Dunne. While there is no doubt about his pace, there have reportedly been major doubts about his on-track behavior. The Irishman currently has, for example, ten penalty points on his super licence, putting him close to a suspension.
It remains unclear what Dunne is going to do now. He will likely compete in F2 for another season, but whether that will be as part of an F1 team’s junior programme is becoming increasingly uncertain.
