With George Russell and Kimi Antonelli confirmed for 2026, Mercedes can now turn its attention to finalising its test and reserve driver line-up for next season.
One man who doesn’t need to worry about his future is Frederik Vesti — a spot will almost certainly be waiting for him in 2026.
The 23-year-old Dane impressed during the first practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix, completing 32 laps and finishing just 1.3 seconds off pace-setter Charles Leclerc.
For Vesti, the FP1 outing was a well-earned reward for his tireless work behind the scenes at Mercedes. The former Formula 2 runner-up has logged countless simulator hours and test runs in older Mercedes F1 cars, contributing to the development of the W16 driven by Russell and Antonelli.

Vesti will takeover the role that is currently occupied by Valtteri Bottas, who will join Cadillac next season for the American team's F1 debut. Although Vesti remains less well known than Bottas - whose personality and humour often put him in the spotlight - the Dane’s quiet professionalism has made him a valued member of the Mercedes setup. Team sources say they are highly satisfied with his performance and attitude.
While an official announcement for 2026 is yet to come, it’s widely expected that Vesti will continue to play a key role with Mercedes next season. The details of his position should become clear in the coming weeks.
In addition to his Mercedes duties, Vesti will also continue racing in the American IMSA Championship, driving for Cadillac Whelen in 2026 - a move confirmed on Tuesday.
