Red Bull are monitoring Alex Dunne's situation with McLaren and could make a move for the Irishman, GPBlog understands.
Alex Dunne has impressed this season in Formula 2 and has a shot at winning the title. He has also caught the eye during tests for McLaren at the Austrian and Italian GPs. Red Bull are kept a close eye on his situation with McLaren, who have Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri under long term deals. GPBlog understands representatives from Red Bull have already spoken with Dunne's management team.
Red Bull Racing advisor, Helmut Marko, who heads the team's junior programme was asked by GPBlog about Dunne joining up with the squad in the future. 'We are talking with all fast drivers and he is fast,' he said. But that is not a confirmation that the team is signing him or that he’s for sure joining Red Bull Junior Team.
However, should Dunne be available then he would be a sensible choice for the Milton Keynes based team who are currently reassessing their options.
And GPBlog understands interest is mutual, as Dunne is also open to a potential move to Red Bull.
Dunne is currently signed to McLaren and also tested for their Formula E team, the British team who see him as a star of the future after he drove in FP1 at the Italian GP in Monza on Friday. McLaren know Dunne, 19, is a hot prospect and have been making plans for next season based on whether he wins the F2 title or not.
If he wins the title in Formula 2 title this season the sport's rules mean he would not be able to compete in the series next season and defend his title. In that scenario, Dunne could be loaned out by McLaren to another racing category.
He is currently in fifth place in the F1 championship with two wins this season.
