Max Verstappen, four-time Formula 1 world champion, is of course the son of Jos Verstappen. His upbringing played a crucial role in shaping his path to success at the pinnacle of motorsport. But who exactly are Max Verstappen’s parents?
Sophie Kumpen and Jos Verstappen are Max Verstappen’s parents and have been separated since 2008. Jos, Max’s father, competed in Formula 1 for many years, taking part in a total of 107 Grands Prix.
By 2021, Max had already surpassed his father’s total number of races. Sophie Kumpen, Max’s mother, also has a racing background, having competed in events such as Formula A and the Super A Swift Cup.
Jos Verstappen, born in Montfort, played a pivotal role in shaping Max Verstappen’s path to Formula 1. During his own racing career, he earned the nickname “Jos The Boss.” Jos always raised his son Max with a firm hand.
Sophie Kumpen retired from competitive racing in 1996 to focus on raising the two children she had with Jos Verstappen, while also supporting Jos in his own racing career. In 2008, Kumpen and Jos Verstappen separated.
She made a brief return to racing in 2013, participating in events such as the Formido Swift Cup, but her comeback ended poorly. During the final races at Zandvoort, she crashed and fractured a vertebra, and she has not raced since.
