Alpine demote Doohan for Colapinto

Jack Doohan is being immediately replaced by Franco Colapinto, as confirmed by the Formula 1 team of Alpine. There had been rumors for some time that the Frenchman might be heading for the exit, but now the decision is finally official.

Even before the Formula 1 season had started, it was reported that Doohan was far from certain to spend the entire season as Pierre Gasly's teammate. Notably, Flavio Briatore, the advisor to the French team, preferred to see reserve driver Colapinto join Alpine.

Franco Colapinto, who last year drove for Williams for half a season, has long been ready to step in at Alpine. The Argentinian will now get his chance. From the next race weekend in Imola, Colapinto will be Pierre Gasly's teammate.

The Italian slid straight off the circuit and made many minor corrections on the artificially damp track in the lead-up to his incident. There didn't appear to be any damage on his vehicle as he went off after just avoiding the tyre barrier. He returned to the track after a lengthy reversing procedure.
