McLaren's chance to seal the constructors' championship went up in smoke after an uncharacteristic and disappointing weekend.
Championship leader Oscar Piastri crashed out on lap 1, while Lando Norris could only finish P7 after a slow pit stop dropped him down the order.
Team principal Andrea Stella said after the race in Baku that Norris' P7 finish was the result of a poor qualifying session, where the Brit was only able to take seventh place.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix also saw some issues for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, with the seven-time world champion not complying with team orders.
Team principal Fred Vasseur said that the Brit had a "misunderstanding" in not letting his teammate through after being told to do so over the team radio.
"There are rules that we know we've got to work with. And today, maybe those rules were not respected," Leclerc said after the race.
