Lewis Hamilton is in his first season with Ferrari, but cannot yet meet (his own) expectations. The Brit has faced many difficulties so far, as observed by Robert Doornbos.
The Dutchman spoke up against motorsport.com about Hamilton's situation at the Maranello team. Doornbos stated that Hamilton's best time is over and compares him to Alonso.
“Alonso delivers just fine. If he smells a bit of competitiveness in the car, he is there - especially after such a comeback with back pain in FP1 [during the GP of Hungary].
"I think it's a different story with Lewis. And the Lewis fans won't like that, but it's almost like he has lost his own identity for a moment.”
Doornbos continued on why it could be that Hamilton has not yet been able to get into form.
“He should go through the books and see what he has accomplished. This man has changed the sport forever.
"He was almost the all time great with the eighth title with one lap to go in Abu Dhabi, but it didn't come. And it seems like he never really got over that blow.”
The seven-time world champion has not yet been able to stand on the podium in a regular race this season. However, he did win the Sprint in China and came third in the Sprint in Miami. He had a tough weekend in Hungary and was hard on himself after the qualification. He even called himself useless. Teammate Charles Leclerc remained hopeful, especially for next year.
