Max Verstappen amazed once again, taking sprint pole position ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to continue his fine form. Conversely, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc struggle to fathom Ferrari's issues after a poor session.
The impressive form of Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing continued at the United States Grand Prix as the Dutchman took a third successive sprint pole position at the Circuit of the Americas.
A stunning final sector from the four-time world champion saw him pip Lando Norris to P1 by 0.072 seconds, while championship leader Oscar Piastri could only finish in P3.
"I still expect it to be a tough battle tomorrow in the Sprint, but that’s I think exactly what we want to see. I’m excited for tomorrow," Verstappen said post-session after laying down an impressive marker.
On the other hand, things appear to be going from bad to worse for Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in another hugely disappointing session for the Scuderia.
Both drivers almost saw their session end prematurely with an SQ2 exit, but after just scraping through by 0.006 seconds, Hamilton could only take P8, while teammate Leclerc finished tenth.
After the session, the pair were crestfallen, with Hamilton bemused that Ferrari's pace "just fell away", while Leclerc showed no optimism for the rest of the weekend: "We are so behind now. I'll be very surprised if we find something that will make such a jump."
Red Bull talent Arvid Lindblad will get another chance behind the wheel of an F1 car next weekend at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
After sprint qualifying in Austin, advisor Helmut Marko confirmed that the Brit would be taking part in FP1 for either Racing Bulls or Red Bull.
