For 2026 Aston Martin is undertaking a prject of mammoth proportions, the likes of which the team has never experienced before, in a bid to vy for titles in F1's new era, and the Adrian Newey words that Fernando Alonso's just revealed, may be everything the team needs to further convince themselves of the path they're currently on.
Aston Martin have premiered a new wind tunnel, and the parts that have come out have all yielded the results that were expected. Thus Aston Martin currently leads the charge behind Williams for best of the rest.
Much like the Grove-based outfit, the British racing green coloured team is entirely focused on 2026, with Newey stating as such many times over. In fact Alonso said that the British designer would simply get up and walk out of the office as soon as someone started to speak about the 2025 season's car.
In a recent interview with Aston Martin partner Maaden, Alonso was asked about his thoughts on Newey.
"For sure the best ever designer in the sport," he said highlighting the British designer's effectivity when it comes to winning titles. "And no one probably will achieve the numbers that he has. And the way he works explains some of the results that he had."
Alonso then highlighted one of Newey's most striking aspects was his self confidence, revealing that the acclaimed designer isn't even thinking about what his F1 rivals can come up with come 2026, utterly convinced that his design will be the best.
"He has an incredible way of seeing the car as one piece that works together, not single devices that provide performance. He just can anticipate the whole car like in one piece. He seems in control of everything all the time.
"Self-confidence that probably I never saw before. He's not stressed about any other team or any other philosophy or any other design. He believes that his will be the best."
When asked how Newey's confidence made him feel, the Spaniard replied concisely.
"Very safe," he said, before equating Newey's perspective to that of an artist, more so than an engineer's.
"He came to Monaco to the race, he was just in the garage. He's not talking to many people, but at the same time, always thinking and touching. You know, the front wheel here, the suspension there. He's, I think, an artist more than an engineer," Alonso concluded.
Come 2026 Aston Martin will not only premiere its first Newey design, but also it's brand new partnership with Honda who will leave its partnership with Red Bull at the end of the current season.
With Andy Cowell's leadership, Newry, Honda, the stated of the art infrastructure, among other things, there's no reason for Alonso and Aston Martin not to dare to disrupt the big four's - McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes - hegemony.
