If someone was to describe Charles Leclerc's pole position as the most surprising moment of the season, no one could fault them. Ferrari team boss assessed the Monegasque's sterling result as well as his teammate's 'failure' Lewis Hamilton.
In the final moments of qualifying on Saturday afternoon hearts became a-light at Maranello as Leclerc soared to the top of the timing sheets ahead of the, as of that moment, relentlessly dominant McLaren's.
As quoted by media the likes of GPblog after the race, the Frenchman analysed how the qualifying went down for Ferrari.
"This was not an easy pole as we struggled in Q1 and Q2 to get the tyres in the right window and we were not far off having both our cars out in Q2."
"Conditions were changing massively, with even some rain in Q2," Vasseur observed.
"Then in the end, Charles found the way to put the tyres in the right window and the correct spot on the out lap."
"It was a mega lap and it's a very positive performance seeing that the delta between P10 and P1 is so small," added the Frenchman, lauding his driver's performance as well as the competitveness of Formula One.
Regarding Hamilton Vasseur saw the Brit failing to mimic his teammate and thus make it into the top 10, something over which the 7-time world champion was obviously distraught.
"Lewis was very close to Charles and failed to make the cut by just 15 thousandths of a second. He will definitely have a tough time in the race."
