The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has introduced revisions to the sporting regulations, with particular focus on grid penalties. This change could affect several drivers on the grid.
The FIA has the authority to issue a range of penalties to Formula 1 drivers, with the type and severity determined by the timing and nature of the incident. These penalties are detailed in the sport's official regulations.
Recently, the FIA made amendments to these rules — particularly those concerning grid penalties. Under the previous system, grid penalties had no expiration and were carried over indefinitely until served. Now, however, a key change has been introduced: grid penalties will expire after 12 months if not applied.
Another adjustment made addresses when the grid penalties must be served. While drivers are generally required to serve it at the next race they enter, this no longer applies in all the cases. for example, drivers who have retired or only participated in a single practice session may not be subject to the penalty under the revised guidelines.
This update will come as a major update for Valterri Bottas. The Finnish driver was handed a five-place grid penalty for his collision with Kevin Magnussen during the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Under the previous rules, he would have been required to serve the penalty upon his return to Formula 1.
However, with the new regulation in place, Bottas will no longer carry the penalty into the upcoming season. According to an exclusive report courtesy of GPblog, he is set to become the lead driver of the new Cadillac team next year. The timing of the rule change works in Bottas' favour, giving him the opportunity to restart his career on a clean slate.
