Head of Ford Performance Mark Rushbrook says the American car giant is "committed" and won't walk away from Red Bull if Max Verstappen ultimately chooses another team. Red Bull Racing is currently working closely with Ford on the development of its new engine for the 2026 season, which the Austrian team will use after their partnership with Honda comes to an end after the 2025 season.
There has been much speculation about a
possible switch by Verstappen, whether that be to Mercedes or Aston Martin, but a final decision to stay or leave has not been made by the Dutchman. As of right now, Verstappen has a contract until mid-2028.
With a troublesome RB21, Verstappen currently sits third in the drivers' standings, with just one win in the opening six Grands Prix
Ford certainly wants to keep Verstappen on board
But even if there is a major shake-up in the driver market with Verstappen moving, Rushbrook and Ford say they will remain committed.
"Do we want to see Max stay in the Red Bull-Ford for 2026 and beyond? Of course. He's a champion. He's a great person, and he elevates the entire team with him, but are we going to run away if Max leaves the team? No. We are committed," Rushbrook said, speaking to Motorsport.com.
"Do you take actions to keep a driver like Max in there? You're already taking those actions anyway because you want to win, but do you also keep a pulse on the people? Of course, so I guess the answer is yes [that we’d like to keep him]," the man from Ford continued.
But even though Rushbrook and Ford say they are committed to staying with Red Bull without Verstappen, of course, there is a desire to work with the four-time champion, with the American very complimentary about the Dutchman.
"He's a champion for a reason. Obviously, his talent, but also that he wants every part of the team and the programme to be the best it can be," concluded Rushbrook.
