F1 pundit and former car designer Gary Anderson didn’t hold back in criticising Lewis Hamilton after a Belgian Grand Prix that once again saw the Briton struggle, despite a late-race comeback to seventh place.

Despite being voted Driver of the Day yesterday, Lewis Hamilton’s comeback in the Belgian Grand Prix wasn’t enough to salvage a weekend that saw him — like Kimi Antonelli — eliminated in Q1 for the second time in a row.

The seven-time world champion also sparked plenty of debate ahead of the weekend after revealing he had sent “documents” to Ferrari outlining what needs to be improved within the team — with a particular focus on the 2026 project, a year in which the Maranello squad is expected to bounce back after a disappointing season so far.

''I was also concerned when I read last week that Hamilton had been sending memos to Ferrari on where they need to be better. You might think that is just a driver trying to help his team improve, but from my experience that is not what you should do.''

This is what F1 pundit and former car designer Gary Anderson shared in his analysis for The Telegraph, emphasizing that Hamilton was actually wrong to share such information with the media.

''You should sit down in a meeting with the relevant people and thrash it all out in person. That way people can have their input, be honest and have a constructive conversation about progress.''

According to Anderson, bringing such sensitive matters via e-mails could lead to misunderstandings and ultimately harm relationships.

''Another fault is that in writing e-mails you can unintentionally say something that can be read not in the spirit it was intended'', he added. ''That can be detrimental to building a better relationship which is what Hamilton needs to be doing right now.''

Is Hamilton suffering Leclerc?

Anderson then shifted the focus to Hamilton’s relationship with Charles Leclerc, highlighting how Hamilton might be struggling with the pressure of competing against another top talent like the Monegasque, who secured his fifth podium of the season at Spa for Ferrari.

''Perhaps Hamilton is also discovering just how good Leclerc is. His team-mate has been at Maranello since 2019 and is their great hope. Hamilton still has the talent to do well for another couple of years, but Leclerc is currently as good if not better.''

With the Belgian GP behind him, Hamilton now finds himself a full 30 points behind his teammate—and, most notably, still without a single podium compared to Leclerc’s five so far this season.

The Brit is hoping for a smoother second half of the season after a turbulent start. On his side, he’ll also have a new race engineer, as he confirmed to the media — including GPBlog — over the past race weekend.
