As George Russell's contract with Mercedes approaches its end in 2025, speculation intensifies regarding the team's plans for its driver lineup. Russell's excelling performance this year has brought about questions as to whether there is an alternative reason for why the British driver has not yet renewed his contract with Mercedes.
So far in the 2025 season, Russell has delivered strong performances, securing multiple podium finishes and establishing himself as a team leader following Lewis Hamilton's departure.
The British team only announced the signing of their newest driver, Kimi Antonelli, in September of last year which brings about the question of whether the team is waiting for any movement in the driver market regarding Verstappen.

No delays, Russell's contract is in the works

However, Toto Wolff has firmly dismissed speculation that Mercedes may delay George Russell’s contract extension while waiting to see if Max Verstappen becomes available. Addressing the rumours, Wolf told the media including GPblog, " George and I are totally clear of how this is going to go. And 100% alignment."
He firmly went on to say that "There is no such thing as dragging this on, There is no such thing as dragging this on, because that's not what we do."
While Mercedes has previously expressed interest in Verstappen, Wolff's comments now suggest that the team is focused on solidifying its current lineup, with Russell playing a central role in their future plans.
