Marko reveals remarkable Red Bull strategy: 'We were looking at Hamilton'

In just one week, the mood in the Red Bull Racing garage turned from deep disappointment to exuberant joy. In a spectacular duel Max Verstappen managed to outpace his rival Charles Leclerc for the win in Saudi Arabia. Helmut Marko, as usual, does not hide his opinion of the Dutchman.
The Red Bull chief applauded the quality of the feat of racing that both drivers showed at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit. "I didn't believe after last year that there was any improvement possible, but apparently there is," he says in conversation with Auto, Motor und Sport.

Marko applauds Verstappen

Whereas Verstappen was unable to attack on the medium tyre in his first stint, he was able to do so on the hard tyre in the closing stages of the race. For that strategy, Red Bull, remarkably, looked to Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes driver stayed on the hard tyre he had started the race with for a long time.
"We took a close look at the wear on the hard tyres with Hamilton and told Max that he could really push," reveals Marko. Another important part of the winning strategy was in the set-up the team opted for after free practice, choosing to fit smaller wings.
According to the 78-year-old man from Graz, that setup was chosen for the race and in doing so the team deliberately gave in at sector one, but were faster on the straights. "When you have a driver like Max behind the wheel, you can rely on him to make it happen," said a proud Marko.

Verstappen was just lucky, it was poor strategy with perez that grave him the win and leclerc made a show of him, it would seem verstappen has not a brain in his head when it comes to racing..

Nothing remarkable about looking at other cars lap times on different tires. All teams do it.

JEM 30 March 2022 at 18:08+ 12858

Yes, but it is still smart to use it in your advantage like Red Bull did this time around.

The Ferrari was quicker than the RB through the corners and thus had to work their tyres harder to get the grip.
RB on the other hand, was quicker down the straight which doesn’t wear the tyres much or cause them to heat up too much.
Thus after a few hot laps of close racing, Charles speed advantage through sector 1 became less, as his tyres got hot, allowing Max to keep closer and then use DRS to overtake on the straights.
Brilliant strategy for the car set up by the RB tacticians.

Marko literally says in this article they took the strategy from Mercedes.

Maybe get Hams into RBR as Max's wingman.

Get in there!!

Redbull don't want to go backwards. They have a good pair of drivers now.

Red Bull having to rely on a legitimate world champion rather than their own driver.
Even in that crappy Merc, they still know he is the yardstick.
Maybe Marko isn't so senile after all. :)

Still throwing digs, did say you carnt write a post with out mentioning red bull or max. We all know who lives in your head rent free. ???

Steveee 30 March 2022 at 16:37+ 223

Redbull definitely lives rent-free in his head. Can you imagine just posting about another person in another team all day long? Get some fresh air. It’s just a motor race

All this rent-free crap, lol. Time to change the record.
It just means you don't like whats being said because you know it's fact.
I don't spend all day long here. But when I am here, I'll post about what and who I damn well please.

Go read all the anti-Lewis posts. They make up the majority here. Then you wonder why there's anti-Max stuff. Well that came after. Learn the ropes here first.

I might not want to write a post without mentioning Red Bull of Max. If it's getting to you that much, then it's working.

Right now I can't tell you who obsess over more, Lewis or me. Can we share space as I'm sure you have plenty of room. :)

Superman 01 April 2022 at 11:38+ 726

I'm obsessed with gold an money mate not a person defo not you an 100% defo not Lewis. Don't try a flatter yourself by thinking your important. I do have plenty or room but you have to pay for that with respect.
