Max Verstappen earns a lot of money, with some estimates running to €100m a year - but he’s not into glitz and glamour. Instead, the Dutchman refuses to put himself on a pedestal, because - in his own words - “we all take a dump on the same toilet".

The colourful assessment was made when the Formula 1 world descended on New York last year for the grand premiere of F1 The Movie while Verstappen was in Belgium. He had decided against being part of the lavish event and instead was testing the GT car of his own team in the run-up to the 24 Hours of Spa.

Verstappen doesn’t want to walk the red carpet

The Dutchman says in the second episode of the Viaplay series Max Verstappen - New Ground:“Over there [in the United States] they’re still asleep while we’re working on performance.”

He then explains that he finds that much more important than being in New York. “I’m not the type who likes to be on the red carpet. That’s not me. I don’t need to hang out with famous people who are invited.”

“I don’t need to be in front of the camera all the time. That’s really not me. I don’t want to stand there in a suit and pretend I’m important. In the end, we all take a dump on the same toilet,” he says, to his own great amusement.

Looking back, that moment in Spa was one for the history books, because that’s where the world was introduced to Franz Hermann—the pseudonym under which Verstappen thought he could anonymously turn laps on the historic circuit.

It soon leaked out, however, that Verstappen was the man behind the name Franz Hermann, and the name lit up forums and social media pages, kicking off his GT racing project with much excitement.
