Laurent Mekies, team principal at Red Bull Racing since the Grand Prix of Belgium, is extremely pleased with Max Verstappen's qualifying in Zandvoort. The reigning world champion in Formula 1 was 'best of the rest' behind Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. According to the team principal of Red Bull, this was also the maximum achievable.

“There was a lot of guys racing for P3 today. There was us, the Mercedes, the Ferraris, probably Fernando (Alonso, ed.), as well at some stage of the weekend.

"We were [among the] many, many cars trying to change their positions. Max did incredible sessions, again, in qualifying, so strong. And, the guys [in the garage] did a very good job”, Mekies responded on Viaplay after the qualification session for the Dutch Grand Prix.

“As they [the team] tried so many things in the weekend, it's no secret we are not very happy with the car balance.

"The guys kept trying with Max, both sides of the garage, and ultimately managed to put the car in slightly better windows and I think, you know, being two and a half tenths from McLaren is about the best we can do right now,” says the team principal of Red Bull Racing.

Mekies noticed that quite a few things have changed after Friday in the Dutch dunes.

“Credit to Max, credit to the team that have been trying so many things, stayed very, very late with the data yesterday.

"And again, after P3, we're still chasing the next few steps. And yes, they have unlocked some performance in the car, which is great."
