Following the dismissal of Christian Horner as team boss at Red Bull Racing, a minor reshuffling took place. Laurent Mekies is now the top boss of the Austrian team, for which Max Verstappen competes.

In turn, the vacated position of Mekies at Racing Bulls has been filled by Alan Permane, the technical man of the second Red Bull team.

And that was not something the Brit initially aspired to. “I think sporting director gives you a decent grounding. It's a much bigger role, of course.”

“There will be many things that are new, but I'm very ready to take it on and then I'm confident I'll do a good job,” he tells Motorsport.

'Red Bull satisfied with Racing Bulls'

Permane was previously largely based in Milton Keynes, where Racing Bulls has a department. In his new role, he will be more often in Faenza. Ideally, Permane could make all sorts of changes at both locations, but looking to his future as a team leader he wants to keep everything as it is.

"Laurent and Peter (Bayer, ed.) have done a fantastic job with this team over the last 18 months, leading to a surge in competitiveness. And my plan is to keep that running, keep the team on the same trajectory as it's been on."

According to Permane, the management of Red Bull is extremely satisfied with the way the second team is being led. “The target is to be top of the midfield, and we are certainly in a battle for that and we'll continue that fight throughout this year."
