After accidentally breaking Max Verstappen’s winner’s trophy in 2023, this time Lando Norris was careful to keep his own well out of harm’s way following his victory at the Hungarian GP.
For Lando Norris, the Hungarian weekend initially looked set to cost him points to Oscar Piastri, having qualified behind his teammate and made a less-than-ideal start to the race.
Instead, the British driver executed a winning strategy with a single stop — the only one among the front-runners to do so — managing his tyres flawlessly all the way to the finish.
The McLaren driver then held off a late charge from his teammate, who had closed in rapidly on much fresher tyres, securing his fifth win of the season.
Lando’s victory is not only a boost for morale, but above all a crucial result in terms of the championship fight. He now sits just 9 points off the top of the drivers’ standings, with ten races still to go.
Norris obviously celebrated his victory with joy, but this time he learned from the mistakes made in 2023. At the Hungarian GP two years ago, the Englishman accidentally broke Max Verstappen’s winner’s trophy on the podium — something Lando was careful to avoid repeating this time around.
The very first thing he did before popping the champagne and celebrating was to take the trophy and place it safely well out of harm’s way, before returning to the podium to celebrate alongside Piastri and Russell.
Lando finally also took his teammate’s trophy, placing that safely out of harm’s way as well.
Here’s the video of Norris’s amusing podium moment.
Norris was also able to celebrate his victory in Hungary with his girlfriend, Margarida Corceiro. This became clear just after the race, when the director's attention shifted to another shot during Oscar Piastri's interview.
