The British driver, who spoke to GPblog during the United States Grand Prix, reaffirmed his commitment to the Mercedes team for the foreseeable future. However, Russell explained that performance remains a key factor in such decisions.

“It always just comes down to performance, for any driver, or at least for myself. What allows me to sleep well at night is knowing that my performances are strong, and that is what will keep you in the sport as any driver," He said.

“Our intention and my goal are to continue with Mercedes indefinitely, and we're here to focus on winning in 2026.”

Ahead of the commencement of the race weekend in Austin, the Mercedes team announced that both Russell and teammate Kimi Antonelli would drive for the team in 2026. The statement, however, did not provide details about the length of the contracts both drivers signed at the Brackley-based outfit.

However, GPblog exclusively confirmed that Russell’s extension is a multi-year deal, while Antonelli’s runs until the end of the 2026 campaign.

Russell focused on winning with Mercedes

Russell also touched on his goals after signing his new deal with Mercedes. The British driver explained that the German outfit gives him the best chance of clinching the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.

“I'm really happy to be continuing because the truth is, if every single seat was available for next year and I could choose any team to race for, I believe Mercedes is my best chance of winning the championship next year.”

“For me, it is more about winning than it is about money or sponsor days or anything. I want to win, and this is what I'm fighting for," he concluded.

Since his switch from Williams ahead of the 2022 campaign, Russell has recorded five race victories with Mercedes, including his most recent win at the Singapore Grand Prix.
