George Russell's conversation with the international media lasted for ten minutes, in which the Brit was continuously bombarded with questions about his future. As the rain steadily fell outside, a confident driver sat in Mercedes' hospitality area, not at all worried about whether Max Verstappen would join the German team or not.

Just one Grand Prix has been won by Russell in 2025, in a season that could be considered his best in Formula 1 thus far. However, there has been doubt for some time about whether his contract with Mercedes will be extended. This could be seen as frustrating, but Russell wasn't bothered.

Russell not frustrated

Russell said: “I think this is my best season, but probably because this, I think, is also the best car I've had in Formula 1, so you're always dependent on that. I'm not that frustrated about my future; I don't really think about it anymore, because I know that it all comes down to performance and results. That's always the case. That's the good thing about a sport like Formula 1, so everything will work itself out in due course."

Russell assumes he will stay with Mercedes in 2026. He has also not spoken to other teams about a contract. The Briton continued, “No, because I'm managed by Mercedes. They control me… So my destiny is in their hands.”

Russell's unique situation

The fact that Toto Wolff serves as both his manager and his boss could be seen as a potential conflict of interest. “This is obviously a bit of a pretty unique situation we find ourselves in," Russell responds to a question from GPblog. “They've always had my best interests at heart, and we'll find out what happens in the future.”

I still have no reason to be concerned about my future at Mercedes, and ultimately, what is the worst that can happen if I continue to perform? I'll still be driving in the Formula 1 and somewhat competitive, so from my side, it just makes you think again. It just comes down to yourself. You're in control of your own destiny."
