Bernd Mayländer, as the safety car driver, has often set the pace for Max Verstappen. The German has shed some light on his relationship with the Red Bull Racing driver.
When an accident happens, a car is stationary on the track, or when there is a lot of debris, the safety car comes onto the track during a Formula 1 Grand Prix to neutralize the race. It then determines the pace of the field.
Bernd Mayländer has been the driver of this safety car for many years. The German is originally a race driver and made his debut in the premier class in 2000. Since then, he has driven quite a few Formula 1 Grand Prix in the safety car.
In recent times, the German has often driven with Max Verstappen in his mirrors. In a conversation with Formula1.nl, Mayländer spoke about his bond with the Dutchman. He can have a good conversation with Verstappen.
“I have contact with everyone at some point, but with regards to the safety car, Max is one of the drivers who occasionally asks why something went the way it went, whether it can be different next time, et cetera.”
“He is open, I can talk to him well about it. I like that. That applies to more drivers. Don't forget that I often already know many of the drivers from Formula 2 and 3,” Mayländer explained.
