According to Ralf Schumacher, Mercedes Toto Wolff remained too 'diplomatic' when reacting to the incident between Max Verstappen and George Russell. While Max Verstappen received heavy criticism for the incident and collision with Russell, the former Formula 1 driver was surprised by Toto Wolff's reaction to the incident.
“What I found most beautiful was Toto Wolff's response,” Schumacher begins on the podcast Backstage Boxengasse
of Sky Sports Germany. “So diplomatic. You almost got the idea that he
and Max were already dining together and talking about next year,” he commented.
Wolff remarkably mild about Verstappen incident
The former Toyota and Williams driver sees Wolff chose not be tougher on the Dutchman.
“Normally, you expect a team principal to offer more protection for his driver, but he said more or less: let's take a calm look at what Max actually did there. And ultimately, nothing serious happened,” the German says.
“I found that quite remarkable. It seems that maybe there's still a door somewhere.”
In a different interview, the Austrian CEO and team principal was a bit more critical of Verstappen's maneouvre, but in a more joking way.
Wolff compared the Dutchman to an Italian tax driver. To that,
he also received a sharp response from the taxi drivers of Rome.
